Analysis of Professional Music Videos from my Chosen Genre - A-Ha "Take On Me"

In the previous post the music video “Take on Me” was mentioned for being a ground breaking video at the time it was released and continues to be just as imaginative to this day. This post will explain why this video is so impressive. Above is the music video which begins with still sketched images on men racing on motorbikes, which builds the tension and excitement for the overall theme involving the emotions that may come to mind when falling in love for the first time.

It is at this point that the image most in a jumpy fashion, emphasising the idea that the woman is flicking through a comic until the images seem to slowly become smoother in the animation. At this point that the scene jumps to live action which seem very different and down to earth to the comic world. This may symbolise the belief that ‘opposites attract’. When the comic man’s hand reaches out of the page is very effective, connect to very different worlds together, matching the tone of the song. Once in the comic world, the animation is much smoother and welcoming, as both the man and woman venture through the hand drawn universe, which is sometimes interrupted by live action in the café. This could represent the difficulties that may try to damage a relationship. Seeing the man break the forth wall, entering the real world is like static on a television, as if the man is willing to fight for love, therefore displaying the meaning to the song title “Take On Me”.
