Music Video Update

Animation can be a long and difficult process, therefore it has resulted in the poster and digipak being made before completing the music video. However, the video itself is in progress and once time has been used in booked areas of the school  (meeting room etc.) the animation should be completed before the deadline, while the live action has no need for school areas, therefore, are being filmed separately and will be edited in afterwards to appear in chronological order.

CD - Draft 2

The second draft of the CD includes the singer's name (John Legend) and the album title "Handcrafted Heart". Legend's name curves around with the shape of the CD disk to provide a more interesting appearance for the target audience, rather than being placed in a straight line, as this convention is dull as it is to be expected, providing a lack of interest. It is placed on the top of the disk to indicate that John Legend has a great importance to the album. The font is the same as it is on the album cover to keep the house style. The white suggests being natural and innocent, while having a black outlines to suggest a darker tone that shows that nothing can truely be perfect. It also appears like an outline for a hand drawn character, linking to the cartoon animation in the music video.

Under the singer's name is the album title which, easily draws in the attention of the audience with it being within a white rectangle, standing out against the blue and green background. This, like Legend's name, is written in the same style as it is for the album cover, once again linking both together into one final product. The white rectangle helps the title to stand out as the title (although it is a lighter shade of blue) would struggle to be seen against a dark blue and green background. The rectangle also represents a slip of paper, linking back to the music video animation and to the title itself "Handcrafted Heart". This idea is developed further, as the paper appears to be stuck onto the disk with two pieces of tape.

Digipak Designs - 3

This section of the digipak follows the house style used for the previous parts. The background is a wooden pattern suggesting that it is a desk with characters from the animation parts of the video visible. Linking to the poster advertising the final product, the character only shows half of his/herself to show that they are whole when together. Both the male and female are seen here, taking up space from both sides. Due to how close they are placed together, looking are the position of their arms, it appears that out of visibility, they are holding hands, showing their bond. In the centre, there is a slip of paper stuck to the it that has lyrics from the song: "give you all to me, I'll give my all to you". This links to the overall message of the song.

Digipak Designs - 2

Here is a design for the contents of the digipak. Once again, it shows a pattern of a wooden desk which links everything together for the house style. Taking up most of the space is the mask that appears both in the video and on the cover however, this time the characters don't surround the mask. Instead the characters are found when looking into the eyes of the mask which is worn by the main female protagonist in the live action sections of the music video. This symbolizes the saying "the eyes are the window to the soul" meaning that when looking into the eyes of another, there is a better understanding how they are truly feeling. The characters in the eyes show that the person behind the mask has many thoughts and need to express themselves, yet hide it all away because of fearing society's judgement. This is also shown with the song lyrics "what's going on in the beautiful mind?" which is written under the mask on a slip of paper and stuck to the desk with tape, showing a struggle for identity.

Complete CD Case Draft 1 (Cover, Back and Side)

This is an image of the front, side and back together to gather a better look at what the album would appear like when opened. The side is the singer's (John Legend) name with the album title next to it. One is not above the other as this would mean decreasing the font size, making it unreadable for the target audience. The font like on the cover appears to be written on a slip of paper, stuck on with tape. Unlike the font however, the singer's name is written in back rather than white with a black outline. This is top help it stand out from the white paper background and provide it with extra attention.

Cover Draft 2

This second draft shows the cover with an album title, allowing the target audience to identify this album apart from other existing products by the same singer (John Legend). The title is located under John Legend's name so that it is one of the first things the audience notices, as the title is important information. It is in the same font as the Legend's name to link them together and also link to the curvy cartoon house style. It appears on a white background representing paper which also frames the text, allowing it to stand out better against the brown wood background. The colour also links with the white mask while the blue text symbolizes the sea seen in the video, as well as being pure and natural but also links to the blue found on the characters.

The title itself "Handcrafted Heart" was chosen for a number of reasons. Firstly, it gives out a clear message to the audience that the main song is about a loving relationship between two people, as a heart is traditionally a representation of love. Secondly, "handcrafted" focuses on the video made with handcrafted characters in stop motion animation as shown on the cover itself. Thirdly, it suggests that this love was created between two people who made their relationship strong.

CD (Back) - Draft 2

For the second draft, copyright information has been added at the bottom of the back in black to stand out and be easy to see and read as it copyright information must be visible to the target audience so they can understand who owns the rights to the song, video etc. and who they audience can and can't use it. The information does not block any view of the song titles so does not disrupt the overall house style. The barcode and company logos have been placed under this to give credit to the people involved if this was a real product in the media. The logos are small enough to not get in the way, but big enough to be noticed. The barcode is in the bottom left band corner adding to the conventions, as this makes the product easy to scan and pay for.

Album Poster Design 3

This is the third poster design that takes a different approach to the previous two designs. This design follows the house style that is an interactive perspective of the stop motion animation, showing each promotional piece as a step in the development and production of the video itself. Therefore, the poster is less conventional.

The same type of font and layout is used as before:
Singer's name, album title, bonus information and date a release.
However, this time, the characters don't take up most of the space. Instead they are smaller and spread out in what may seem like random places at different angles. This is to promote the idea that the video is still in production, showing characters spread out on the desk ready to be animated. The album in the centre, takes up most of the space, showing the importance of the cover to make it easy to remember for the target audience. The album appears to be on a white square background representing the paper used to create the white background in music video. It also draws the eye to in section of the poster, as the white frames the cover, providing it with more attention.

I also took a photo of some earphones to placed then in the corner to point out what the poster is advertising and suggests that while creating the music video, the creator of the video was listening to music by the singer in question (John Legend) which is true, as listening to song would allow for the animation to keep up with the pace of the lyrics.

Album Poster Design 2 (Girl)

This is the second poster that would be used to promote the album. It is identical to the previous poster however, this time the information is on the left side of the poster with the character on the right. The character here is the female protagonist showing half of herself, once again showing that she and the male protagonist need each other to feel whole. This is shown when both posters are placed side by side.

Album Poster Design 1 (Boy)

This is a poster that would be used to promote the music album. It follows many of the conventions of typical album advertisement including the artist's name, the album title, image of the album in question and the release date. It also links to the music video linking the album to connect both together, keeping the house style of a hand crafted stop motion animation. Therefore it keep the wooden desk background and references to the hand crafted characters seen in the video. The background however, is faded to a pale colour to prevent the album cover image from blending in and becoming harder to identify.

The font is the same as the album to keep them connected. John Legend's name is found at the top of the poster to increase the idea of his importance, making sure it is one of the first things the target audience can see. The information "includes 'All of Me'" brings forward the knowledge of the main song used to promote the album along with the music video. The information under this is at the bottom making it the last thing the audience sees therefore will be an element they will be able to remember for longer. This appears to be on a small piece of paper from a note book, reminding the audience of the elements used to create the video and makes it more interactive. The font is written in green, allowing it to stand out and be easy to spot and also to link to the male protagonist in the video.

The male protagonist  takes up most of the space, showing the importance to the character, making it less conventional as it does not show a photograph of John Legend himself. The character only shows one side of it symbolising the idea that he needs his other half (the female protagonist) to become whole.

Digipak Designs - Draft 1

This is one of the designs that will go into the final product digipak. It establishes the process of producing the animation in the music video, linking everything together as an over all house style. Here is one of the photos taken so far in the production with all of the characters together. This follows the conventions that the main protagonist is shown all over the album, however all characters are present, looking away from conventions as this makes all of the characters equal.

The image shown is the wedding scene near the end of the animation, reflecting on the meaning of John Legend's song "All of Me" which is that your faults can be seen as a perfection in the eyes are another, therefore you should never doubt yourself. This links with the lyrics added at the bottom, "'Cause all of me loves all of you".

CD Contents Design 1 - Disk Area (With CD)

This is an image of the contents used for the album showing what it would look like to the target market with the disk inside. The world is placed within the "drawn" circle to appear like a drawing within the note book page.

CD Contents Design 1 - Disk Area (Without CD)

This image is a design for the contents of the digipak. Like the cover and back of the album, this draft links to the process of creating the music video to make it more interactive and unique to the target audience. Unlike the cover and back however, this draft doesn't used a wooden pattern background. Instead, it focuses on the early steps of the development of the animation, focusing on the character designs. Here, the background is white with lines going across with circles, given a 3D look with edited in shadows going down the left side. This gives the appearance of a note book page, to represent the original design sketches.

There are also images of the main female and male protagonists on either corner of the book page and as well as a fish labelled, showing the first ideas for the video. This images are the original drawings from the notebook used to character designs to show the early developments.

The font remains the same of the cover and back of the album, to link them together, using black to refer to the black outlines of a drawing. This idea is shown with the title "Time to draw!", which promotes the music video as well as creativity.

A circle in the center is added appear to be drawn with the start and end of the circle over lapping to increase this point. The text "Disk Here" not only shows where the CD will be placed, but also the idea that everything was drawn out step by step, to plan out the final product.
